ABQ's Creative Economy

A central feature of Creative Albuquerque's action plan revolves around building shared knowledge and, thus, encouraging creative fellowship. We have compiled the following in order to increase familiarity with local, national and international dialogue on the creative economy and its relationship to economic development.

ALBUQUERQUE AND BEYOND

The Creative Economy of Albuquerque illustrates the relationships between creative individuals, industries and institutions in our city. We adapted, expanded and applied creative economy research to the unique elements of our creative community.

Arts & Cultural Districts: Albuquerque Arts and Cultural Districts Resource Team Assessment contains the summary report and concluding recommendations of a task force assembled by New Mexico MainStreet. The assessment, disseminated in 2009, focuses on how to best facilitate the enrichment, progress and sustainability of Albuquerque's Downtown Arts and Cultural District.

Organizing for the Arts & Culture Industries: A Better Future for All is the record and summary of findings from a series of Town Hall Meetings held in August 2009. A follow-up to the September 2008 Arts and Cultural Industries Action Plan Search Conference (see below), the Town Halls examined what a "go-to" arts organization would look like and whether Arts Alliance could become that organization with the support of the community.

Arts and Cultural Industries Action Plan Search Conference Final Report is the record and summary of findings from a September 2008 conference in which over forty representatives of the Greater Albuquerque community participated. A response to the 2007 BBER study (see below), the process focused on issues of economic development in the arts and cultural industries.

The Economic Importance of the Arts & Cultural Industries in Albuquerque and Bernalillo County was published by UNM's Bureau of Business and Economic Research 2007. If there are any doubts as to just how important arts and cultural industries are to our city, this brilliant study - directed by Dr. Jeffrey Mitchell - surely dissuades them.

Cultural Entrepreneurship: At the Crossroads of People, Place, and Prosperity is the work of Santa Fe's Global Center for Cultural Entrepreneurship and was funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Published in 2010, the study examines the significance of cultural entrepreneurs to local economies and, particularly, to families and children.

Creative Economy Report 2008, released by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization), offers a global perspective on the creative economy and the significant role it plays in contemporary development.
