Melissa Roberts and Kurt Schlough

Melissa Roberts and Kurt Schlough, recent Albuquerque transplants (by way of New Orleans) and new Creative Albuquerque members, have partnered their diverse backgrounds and 25+ years of combined experience as artists, designers and former gallerists to create many diverse and exciting arts-related projects, including BECA: Bridge for Emerging Contemporary Art and New Studio A.D.

For the last 14 years, Kurt has been a nationally exhibiting sculptor and painter, while simultaneously serving as the Senior Vice President of Design and lead project manager at an award-winning New Orleans architectural firm.  Melissa is an artist, designer and activist with an academic background in fine arts, biology and communications who creates work in a variety of mediums including sculpture, installation, textiles, and digital art.  She also has a professional design background in graphic arts and textile design and has exhibited her works both nationally and internationally. When asked why they recently relocated to Albuquerque, Melissa and Kurt say, "We came for the air - we're staying for the art." And the pair is already making their innovative mark on our creative community.

From September 1 - 14 and with an opening reception on September 3, BECA Foundation – an international non-profit project of which Melissa and Kurt are acting volunteer directors – will present SHIFT, a group exhibition of new art and design works by Markeith Chavous, Sayaka Ganz, Silvia Giannoni, Rob Glover and Fritz Morton. The exhibition features works that express, reveal, embody or address a change or movement on some level – be it social, cultural, physical, metaphysical, political, technological or any other relative shift.

The BECA Foundation will host the exhibition at New Studio A.D., another of Melissa and Kurt's projects. New Studio A.D. is a multi-functional studio, exhibition and event space. The studio specializes in architectural design, project management, art and design development/creation/sourcing,  procurement/installation for both temporary and permanent interior/exterior environments and events (commercial, residential, civic, community, film, theatre).

New Studio A.D. will host its first open house during Albuquerque’s First Friday ArtsCrawl on October 1, but the space is currently open by appointment. To learn more about their fabulous endeavors, or to schedule a visit at New Studio A.D., email Melissa and Kurt  or call them at 505-244-0223. And please join Creative Albuquerque in welcoming the dynamic duo!
